Labradors are active dogs and need daily exercise to keep them happy. They were originally bred to retrieve fish off boats and pull nets for fishermen then later when taken to England, they became retrievers of waterfowl.
As puppies, they are very active and need a secure yard, toys and daily walks. They are routine orientated and need to go to the bathroom outside after eating, drinking, playing and sleeping when young. Since the puppy's bladder is small, don't expect them to be housebroken before 4 mos. of age. A good crate training set up inside would be an exercise pen clipped to a crate with newspaper and food and water bowls in the pen and a blanket or towel in the open door crate.
Once puppies have their completed shots, you can take them to a puppy class for socialization. For leash training, we put a buckle collar on them with a light leash that they drag around and step on. You then can take the pup on short walks, encouraging them to follow you on lead with treats. You can enroll in an obedience class when the pup is 6 mos. old but there are some good books and videos on teaching dogs obedience at libraries and online.
Labradors are all around dogs that can be trained to be seeing eye dogs, therapy dogs, obedience competitors, show dogs, hunting companions, diabetic or epilepsy alert dogs, narcotic dogs and loving companions for the family.
A well trained dog is a joy to live with and a happy Labrador is one that has a job!
